Ebay Age Requirement Changes – Creating Young Entrepreneurs Or Spendaholics?

Recently Ebay announced it was thinking about removing the 18 minimum age requirements.

As parents, we have a bunch of very tech savvy young people on our hands, and places like Ebay opening its doors to youngsters is something we all need to think about.

Is it a good or a bad thing? Will it create a group of young entrepreneurs or will it simply encourage kids to spend even more of your money?

Like anything, there are no easy answers, but for me, I’m leaning more on the latter side. Ebay, or as one friend dubbed it on her computer, ‘Evil Temptress’ is a place just begging for you to spend your money. Different to other big online spending arenas, Ebay offers people the chance to find hard-to-find things and collectors pieces. And for kids…well, remember when you just had to have that Star Wars toy that was no longer in production? Or that record (or CD) everyone was clamouring for?

As a kid, you’d spend all your pocket money or wages from your part time job on something ridiculous (unless you were one of those kids that saved most of their money for the future – but let’s face it, those kids are unlikely to be on Ebay, anyway).

Having something like Ebay available to you is like plonking your child in the proverbial candy store – a disaster waiting to happen.

The thing is, Ebay runs on one of those honour systems. If you put in an age over 18, have access to a credit card and therefore a Paypal account, then you can buy and sell things on it. So there’s no real reason – except for greed – in lowering the age requirements.

Parenting, it seems, is all about monitoring what your kids do online, on their tablet and on their smart phones these days. Some kids have their own credit cards (albiet provided by their parents), or access to their parents’ credit card, so shopping online and indeed on Ebay is easy enough, anyway, without Ebay paving the way.

I thank the heavens for having parental control apps like FeelSecure Complete, where I can not only block such places like Ebay, but keep remote tabs just what my kids are doing when online – and

Whether or not you have a budding entrepreneur on your hands or a mini shopaholic, I personally think it’s best to have them wait a few more years to find out which they are. Don’t you?
